U.S. Virgin Islands: Police ammunition found in gang stockpiles
UN experts have alerted the Security Council about the regular use by gangs of weapons and ammunition from police stocks, according to a report published on September 3, 2026. According to this document, 70% of the 336 7.62 x 51 mm cartridges seized from two gangs in 2026 came from theft by the Haitian National Police.
The report indicates that some cases reveal trafficking activity rather than loss due to confrontations. It also highlights the importance of ammunition transfers between the Armed Forces and the police, although this chain remains uncertain.
Specific examples
The Expert Group confirmed the presence of boxes and 5.56 x 45 mm ammunition used by gangs and a self-defense group. This ammunition corresponds to that recently imported for the Haitian Armed Forces.
