The sudden death of Tenerife player Jesús de Miguel, after a violent collision with the opposing goalkeeper in a Spanish second-division match on Monday, 2 November, has plunged the football world into deep shock. The Canary Islands club announced the death of its striker on Tuesday morning.

President Felipe Miñambres and Rayco Garcia, principal shareholder of CD Tenerife, paid a moving tribute to Jesús de Miguel by observing a minute's silence before kick-off in the scheduled matches. The Spanish Federation (REF) called off all the games planned for 3 November.

The accident happened during the match between Tenerife and FC Andorra, when Jesús Owono, the opposing goalkeeper, came out awkwardly to clear the ball and struck the Spanish forward. De Miguel was taken to hospital in a critical condition with head and chest injuries.

The club wishes to offer its condolences to his family, teammates and loved ones: Jesús de Miguel has died at 30. May he rest in peace. Kylian Mbappé posted on Instagram: great sadness, there are no words.

Goalkeeper Jesús Owono, who says he never meant to inflict serious injuries on his opponent, is facing a veritable avalanche of criticism and online threats. Spain's national police have opened an investigation into the exact circumstances of the death.
