The brutal murder of Zeneida Socorro Castillo, wife of merengue singer Julián Oro Duro, has renewed concerns about violent crime in the Dominican Republic. The incident occurred during a robbery at their home in Santo Domingo Este on September 18, 2026. According to Le Floridien, Castillo was beaten and stabbed while preparing food for guests who later attacked her.
Dominican police arrested several suspects involved in the murder and recovered stolen cash and personal belongings from the scene. Despite this violent crime, Dominican authorities reported a homicide rate of 7.34 per 100,000 inhabitants as of September 18, which is lower compared to previous years.
Recent criminal activities in Greater Santo Domingo include dismantling or pursuing several alleged groups involved in armed robberies and kidnappings. In August, police announced arrests connected to an organization accused of multiple armed robberies in Distrito Nacional and Santo Domingo Oeste. A September shooting in Boca Chica left two dead and five wounded; suspects were linked to the attack and other crimes.
While these incidents do not indicate a general security collapse like Haiti’s situation, they highlight the importance of addressing growing criminal organizations before they become too powerful. The lesson from Haiti is that confronting such groups early can prevent them from acquiring weapons, territory, and influence that make them harder to control.
