The municipal authorities of Cité Soleil are demanding urgent action from the government before the end of December. They are citing the deterioration of living conditions in the commune, according to Vant Bèf Info. Their message is addressed to the head of government, Alix Didier Fils-Aimé.
A request made before the residents
The request was made publicly on Monday, November 2, during the Gédé festival. The ceremony was held at the Drouillard cemetery, with the mayor's office and the population in attendance. The chosen theme was "Ann selebre lavi nan lanmò ak Gede yo".
Municipal councilor Johny Lundy spoke. "Instead of celebrating life in death, we want to celebrate life in life," he declared. He added that the residents aspire to dignified conditions and concrete support from the State.
What the mayor's office and the residents are demanding
Several issues were raised. The Soleil 4 bridge calls for intervention from the State. The accumulated waste was also denounced: the councilor believes that the population deserves a healthier environment and more breathable air.
The municipal authorities and the residents also wish for new electoral registration offices to open. They proposed four locations: the Lycée national de Cité Soleil, Duvivier, Don Bosco, and Sainte-Anne. According to them, this would facilitate citizen participation in the electoral process.
A commune that is deteriorating
The authorities are observing a progressive decline of the commune. They attribute it to insufficient support from the State, which restricts the mayor's office's room for maneuver in the face of the residents' needs.
Still according to Vant Bèf Info, Cité Soleil has been going through a serious security crisis for several years. The media outlet indicates that armed violence spread in 2022 and that the situation has worsened significantly since then. Ever since, the residents have been demanding support from the authorities.
