Christa Pike is back in prison after surviving her execution

Christa Pike, sentenced to death for a murder committed in 1995, was transferred Saturday from the hospital in Nashville to the Deborah K. Johnson prison in Nashville, where she is currently under continuous medical supervision.

Her lawyers stated that Pike, aged 50 and convicted of the murder of Colleen Slemmer in 1995, regained consciousness after receiving two doses of the sedative pentobarbital during a failed execution in Tennessee. She is now able to walk and eat again.

Medical experts are still questioning the exact reasons for the relative success of the lethal injection and why the pentobarbital was not fatal to her.

Pike is the first person to survive after receiving a lethal injection, according to the Death Penalty Information Center. Her lawyers continue to call on Governor Bill Lee to commute her death sentence to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
