Security chief kidnapped during election preparations

Laurent is assigned to the Prime Minister's Security Unit (USPM). According to initial reports, he may have been able to communicate with his family Monday morning, but no ransom demand has been publicly made by his kidnappers.

The kidnapping comes as Paulémon increases her travel related to election preparations. On September 7, she visited the Departmental Electoral Bureau (BED) in Artibonite at Gonaïves at the instruction of Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé. On September 24, she toured the BED in the South at Les Cayes to discuss mobilizing her ministry's agents to support certain election activities.

The Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) had reminded Sunday that official campaigns are not yet authorized, in accordance with article 193 of the electoral decree which sets the start and end dates for this period by the CEP.
