Andrea Cantarini, 37, a nurse at St. Barnabas Hospital, and her partner Juan Cornelio Diaz, 38, a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer stationed at JFK Airport, were found dead on the night of Tuesday, November 3, 2026, in her apartment on Blackstone Avenue in Riverdale, the Bronx, Daily Voice reports. Both had been shot in the head. New York police describe it as an apparent murder-suicide, according to Newsweek.

Her father, Rudy Cantarini, a retired New York police officer, told the New York Post that she called him at 8:47 p.m. to say Diaz was threatening her with a gun. He stayed on the phone for 14 minutes pleading with the officer, until he heard a gunshot and Diaz told him: "She's gone, Rudy." The 911 call reporting an assault came in at about 9:04 p.m., Newsweek says.

Threatened that morning

According to her father, Diaz had already threatened her with a gun that morning. She left their 6-year-old daughter with her grandfather before going to work, then went home after her shift believing her partner would be at work; he was waiting for her. Her family and coworkers had urged her not to go back to the apartment. He believes she wanted to end the relationship. The child was not there.

CBP says it is cooperating with the investigation, which is led by New York police. In the United States, victims of domestic violence can call the national hotline at 1-800-799-7233.
