3x3 basketball: Haiti exit the AmeriCup with one win, without a substitute

Haiti's men's 3x3 basketball team went out of the FIBA 3x3 AmeriCup 2026 in the qualifying stage, with one win and two losses, on Wednesday 28 October in San Salvador, El Salvador. Beaten by Saint Kitts and Nevis (18-14) and Venezuela (21-11), the Grenadiers defeated Nicaragua (21-19) in their final game.

Haiti played in Group B of the qualifying draw, with Venezuela, Saint Kitts and Nevis and Nicaragua. Under FIBA's rules, only the winner of each group reaches the main draw. Venezuela, which won all three of its games, took the spot. The tournament continues until 1 November at Plaza Merliot.

Three games without a substitute

According to a post relaying the Haitian Basketball Federation (FHB), the team played all three games with three players and no substitute: its fourth player was injured just before the tournament. In 3x3, a team normally has four players, one of them a substitute.

Against Saint Kitts and Nevis, the game stayed close from start to finish, but Haiti never managed to take the lead, according to the Salvadoran daily Diario El Salvador. Against Venezuela, the Haitians held their own early before giving way to the Venezuelan pace, the same paper reported.

Also according to the post relaying the FHB, this AmeriCup was the team's 3rd international competition of the year, and it was played without financial support from the Haitian state, notably the Sports Ministry. No response from the ministry had been made public as of Thursday 29 October.

In August, the men's 3x3 team finished 5th at the Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo, Chokarella reported. Haiti is taking part in the 3x3 AmeriCup for the sixth year in a row, according to the same outlet.
