The Ministry of the Environment (MdE) held a training workshop on November 5, 2026 in Port-au-Prince, aimed at promoting biodiversity conservation and the sustainable development of local communities. The event was part of the Man and the Biosphere Programme (MAB), launched by UNESCO in 1971.
Yves Bernard Remarais, chief of staff to the Minister of the Environment, officially opened the day. He stressed that local communities play a crucial role in the lasting protection of Haiti's natural reserves, particularly those recognized by UNESCO, such as La Selle and La Hotte.
Ematel Bélance, coordinator of the Haiti Biosphere Reserves Management Unit (UGRBH), presented the objectives of the Man and the Biosphere Programme. He also noted that the worldwide network includes 797 reserves spread across various countries.
The workshop provided a forum to discuss the challenges facing these protected areas, notably deforestation, ecosystem degradation and climate change. The ministry intends to step up awareness efforts to draw in more of the stakeholders involved.
