Agronomist Valdez Sierra warns against environmental degradation
Agronomist Gabriel Valdez Sierra issued an urgent appeal to protect natural resources and preserve biodiversity during the presentation of his book titled "Natural Resources and Ecology." According to him, soil erosion is occurring faster than it can naturally regenerate. Additionally, he highlighted that the increase in greenhouse gases could lead to rising temperatures and put pressure on water resources, as well as agricultural production and coastal zones.

Valdez Sierra pointed out the rapid decline of productive spaces and the annual addition of an additional 61,000 square kilometers of desert. He also emphasized that the continued destruction of tropical forests threatens ecosystems and could negatively impact food production and water reserves.
The book examines the evolution of the protected areas system in the Dominican Republic since the 1950s, with particular focus on the José Armando Bermúdez National Park and the José del Carmen Ramírez National Park. It also addresses the Carebios project which aims to strengthen the resilience of ecosystems in transboundary biosphere reserves shared between Haiti and the Dominican Republic.
