Twenty residents of Westmoreland, Jamaica, were honoured for their contribution to the development of the parish at a ceremony held on National Heroes Day, Monday, October 19, at Norman Square in Savanna-la-Mar, the Jamaica Information Service (JIS) reported.
Twelve of the recipients were recognised for service in education, agriculture, public service, community development, health, culture and religion. The other eight are employees of the Westmoreland Municipal Corporation, drawn from five departments, who were honoured for long service: each has worked for the corporation for more than 25 years, and some for as long as 32 years.
The Mayor of Savanna-la-Mar, Councillor Danree Delancy, told the gathering that the honourees' dedication recalled the spirit of Jamaica's National Heroes. As the country celebrates its heroes, he said, it is just as important to recognise people who "continue to inspire hope, strengthen communities and contribute to the development of our country."
"While their contributions differ, the award recipients are united by a common purpose; a genuine desire to serve others and to leave a positive and lasting impact on the lives of those around them," the mayor said. He credited them with strengthening communities, supporting livelihoods, preserving cultural traditions and improving the wellbeing of residents across the parish.
Of the long-serving municipal staff, Delancy said their "loyalty, professionalism, hard work and institutional knowledge" had helped the corporation keep delivering its services. He added that a meaningful contribution to society does not require extraordinary achievements, and that "true greatness is measured not only by what we achieve for ourselves, but also by what we contribute to the lives of others."
The Westmoreland Heroes Day Salute and Awards Ceremony was organised by the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) in partnership with the Westmoreland Municipal Corporation, according to JIS.
