Psychologist pleads for better mental support for police officers

The problem arises when these agents hesitate to seek help out of fear of being judged or seen as weak. According to Pascal Néry Jean-Charles, about 300 psychologists are registered with the Haitian Psychological Association.

Several recent tragedies have highlighted the need for mental support for police officers. Last July, two agents were found dead under suspicious circumstances. On October 3rd, a policeman killed his family before taking his own life.

For Pascal Néry Jean-Charles, the state must take concrete steps to improve working conditions and provide adequate psychological support to police officers. He particularly recommends establishing or strengthening accessible psychological support units.

The mental health of agents is crucial not only for their personal well-being but also for the effectiveness of their missions and public safety.
