Dominican Republic: Attorney General's Office refuses to disclose data on deaths caused by police action

The Attorney General's Office (PGR) has refused to provide information requested by Diario Libre seeking to know the exact number and results of criminal investigations related to alleged exchanges of gunfire between civilians and police officers in the Dominican Republic during the period from January to September 2026. The PGR relied on legal confidentiality to refuse to answer questions about deaths reported as exchanges of gunfire, open or archived investigations, and the procedures used by the Public Prosecutor's Office.

The request included specific details on how many deaths were criminally investigated, how many investigations remain active, how many have been archived, how many police officers have been prosecuted or convicted, and whether contradictions were identified between police reports and autopsy results. However, the PGR did not provide any statistics or detail the protocols used in cases where a person dies during a police intervention.
