The ranking of French goal scorers
According to Football.fr, Karim Benzema leads with 524 goals. Kylian Mbappé follows with 445 goals, then Thierry Henry with 411. Gignac comes next, and Roger Courtois, who played for FC Sochaux Montbéliard and the national team in the 1930s and 1940s, rounds out the top five with 364 goals. Giroud is thus very close to fourth place.
The end of Gignac's career
According to Football.fr, Gignac retired at age 40 on May 31 during the final of the Champions Cup of North America. His team lost in a penalty shootout against Toluca (1-1, 5-6).
He joined Mexico in 2015 after his time with Marseille, where he scored 77 goals in five years. Over eleven seasons with Monterrey, he scored 222 goals in 444 matches across all competitions. He won five Mexican league titles and a Concacaf Champions League. His club also reached the final of the Copa Libertadores.
Football.fr notes that the striker played in Euro 2016, where France lost the final to Portugal (1-0 after extra time).
Two strikers rarely paired
Football.fr points out what it considers surprising: Gignac and Giroud have 17 matches together for the French national team, but they only played on the field once. Didier Deschamps put them both in the second half during a 0-0 draw against Georgia on September 6, 2013.
