According to Foot Mercato, this decision comes in a context of financial and strategic tensions. On March 31, 2023, Nike officially announced Erling Haaland's return with a record contract worth 227 million euros over ten years, which is significantly higher than Mbappé's annual salary of 16.8 million euros. This announcement is seen as the final straw by those close to the player.
Nike has faced difficulties recently. Its stock price has fallen by 50%, and its decline in digital and Asian markets is dramatic. Despite this, Nike continues to invest in the new generation, such as Désiré Doué (3 million euros per year) and Nuno Mendes.
In response to this situation, Mbappé's team activated their networks to find a new partner. Adidas, New Balance, or Under Armour were approached before the Swiss equipment manufacturer On won with an unprecedented offer.
According to Foot Mercato, the last two exclusive models of Mbappé did not sell well, and requests for personalization in the French Football Federation's stores have dropped. The partnership between Mbappé and Nike was extended until summer to cover image-related issues tied to the 2026 World Cup, but the player is now an ambassador and shareholder of On.
