Discussions without Immediate Commitments
Rector Valérie Debuchy convened an extraordinary academic council via video conference on Tuesday, October 6, to address issues such as transportation, dining services, or security. Following the discussions, the student delegate reacted strongly: "The meeting took place and, unsurprisingly, it was a total disappointment." The academic administration considers this exchange as an initial phase and notes the deployment of a national consultation available until October 23.
A Denunciation of Teaching Conditions
The protesters denounce the lack of medical staff, the dilapidated state of the bathrooms, and damages from Cyclone Chido that have not been repaired. According to Le Journal de Mayotte, teachers also support this protest against class sizes that can reach up to 36 students. An occupant of the square explained: "Conditions at the high school do not allow for work. There is no nurse, and the facilities are deplorable; it's not a place where one can study in peace."
Tensions and Disruptions in the Archipelago
The demonstration outside Younoussa Bamana led to burning trash cans and throwing projectiles, which prompted tear gas from law enforcement. According to Mayotte Hebdo, classes were also interrupted or canceled at several other schools in Kaweni, Chirongui, and Sada.
