According to information reported by Métropole, relatives stated that the magistrate succumbed following a sudden illness.
Tributes and the mourning period
The municipality has established a mourning period to honor his memory. However, accounts differ regarding its duration: Le Quotidien 509 mentions five days of reflection from Monday, October 19, to Friday, October 23, 2026, while Le National reports a full week extending from October 19 to October 24, 2026.
According to Le Quotidien 509, Marie Guerda Désilus, a member of the interim municipal council, announced several commemorative gatherings. A public tribute is to be held on Saturday, October 24, in front of city hall, followed by a wake that same afternoon at the Karibe Hotel located in Pétion-Ville. The newspaper also specifies that his funeral will take place on the morning of Sunday, October 25, at the Baptist Mission site in Kenscoff.
Furthermore, according to IciHaiti, the Minister of the Interior and Territorial Collectivities, Paul Antoine Bien-Aimé, traveled with an official delegation to the commune to present his condolences to the family of the deceased.
A commitment in the face of armed violence
During his term, Jean Massillon found himself on the front lines against the repeated assaults by armed gangs on Kenscoff. The Prime Minister's Office praised a leader who chose to remain by his fellow citizens' side despite the climate of violence and the forced displacement of residents.
Regarding the succession at the head of the commune, Marie Guerda Désilus specified, according to Le Quotidien 509, that the choice of his replacement depends directly on the central government, namely the Prime Minister's Office as well as the Ministry of the Interior and Territorial Collectivities.
