Isabelle Jégouzo visits Martinique to raise awareness about corruption risks
Isabelle Jegouzo, the director of the French Anti-Corruption Agency (AFA), has been in Martinique since Tuesday, October 13, to meet with local elected officials and exchange with them on precautions to take to avoid the misappropriation of public funds. This visit comes at a time when Martinique is facing twice as many corruption cases as mainland France, according to Jegouzo.

Between 2018 and 2025, 22 cases on Martinique territory led to the conviction of 32 people, mainly local elected officials and agents of territorial collectivities. The director explains that these figures are alarming because they show a high rate of misappropriation of public goods.
Jegouzo emphasizes the importance of clearly identifying personal relationships in relation to public service, particularly avoiding practices such as hiring or awarding grants to relatives. She adds that drug trafficking, estimated at 7 billion euros annually in the region, also increases the risks for administrative probity.
The director met with several local officials yesterday and continues her program in Martinique until she has discussed with all elected officials of the territory.
