Bigio founded the GB Group in 1972 with the Aciérie d'Haïti, his first major industrial project. Over the years, his group became diversified across several important economic sectors such as construction materials, consumer goods, and the Lafito port.

Although recognized for his wealth and large-scale international activities, Bigio was also surrounded by controversy. In 2022, Ottawa sanctioned him along with Reynold Deeb and Sherif Abdallah for their alleged role in the illegal financing of armed gangs in Haiti.

Gilbert Bigio's funeral is announced for next Thursday in Hollywood, Florida. Precise details regarding his death have not been communicated by authorities or his family.
