Fils-Aimé meets with the OEA secretary general in Washington, without prior announcement

Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé was in Washington on Thursday. According to Vant Bèf Info, he met with the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Albert Ramdin, to discuss security and elections. The trip was made without an announcement from the Prime Minister's office, according to Rezo Nòdwès. An opponent of his management sees it as a lobbying operation.

What Albert Ramdin Says

Vant Bèf Info relies on a message that Ramdin published on X. According to this message, the exchanges focused on Haiti's security situation and the preparation for upcoming elections. Ramdin mentioned better coordination between Haitian institutions and their international partners. He also spoke about the advancement of preparations for a credible electoral process.

The OAS official reiterated that the organization supports solutions proposed by Haitians themselves. He cited collaboration with the country's authorities, CARICOM, the UN, and other partners. His goal, he wrote, is to turn commitments into concrete progress for the population.

His message does not mention any decision resulting from the meeting or a new date for the vote.

A Departure Without Ceremony

Rezo Nòdwès reports that the government chief left the country in an unusual discretion. The newspaper says it had no prior communication from the Prime Minister's office. During his previous trips, ministers and general directors came to greet him at the airport before he boarded his private plane. The cost of this flight has never been made public.

This trip comes less than a month after his stay in New York for the UN General Assembly. The newspaper notes that it raises questions about its purpose, interlocutors, and benefits for Haiti.

Dr. Josué Renaud's Accusations

Josué Renaud is the executive director of New England Human Rights Organization (NEHRO). Interviewed Thursday evening by Rezo Nòdwès, he judges that this discreet departure reflects a weakening of Prime Minister Fils-Aimé among his international partners. According to him, Fils-Aimé would have understood that their trust is now limited due to commitments made on security and elections. "He is out of favor," he estimates.

Renaud asserts that the Prime Minister's lobbyists in Washington advised him to make the trip. He accuses them in these terms: "Since he is wasting the country's money, his lobbyists in Washington told him to come to see how he could manage this situation." He adds: "He realizes that his days are numbered. He is making a last effort to see if he can salvage himself."

The December 13 Vote

Rezo Nòdwès notes that neither the Provisional Electoral Council nor the Prime Minister's office have announced the cancellation of the December 13 vote. The Minister of the Interior, Paul Antoine Bien-Aimé, published a statement on the resignation of interim executive agents who want to be candidates. They must leave within seven days following the publication of the electoral decree.

Renaud judges these measures aimed at showmanship. "It's for show," he says of the statement, before asserting: "They know very well that there will not be elections on December 13."
