In Haiti, only ten percent of hospitals are operating at full capacity.

Barely one-tenth of medical facilities with inpatient beds are operating at full capacity in Haiti. According to Vant Bèf Info, this figure comes from report S/2026/714, drafted by the United Nations Panel of Experts on Haiti and made public in September 2026. Armed insecurity and the control criminal gangs exert over major roads are preventing the population from reaching care centers while forcing facilities to close their doors.

Direct attacks on hospitals

Insecurity has hit the facility managed by Médecins Sans Frontières in Cité Soleil hard. In May 2026, violent fighting struck the buildings of this facility, wounding a guard and forcing the complete evacuation of patients and caregivers. MSF had to suspend its operations on May 11, before beginning a gradual reopening of its emergency services starting June 1, following a three-week shutdown. These clashes are particularly disrupting the monitoring of chronic conditions and the provision of maternal healthcare.

Rise in lethality and surgical pressure

Armed violence recorded in 2025 caused 5,915 deaths and 2,708 injuries. According to the UN experts cited by the media outlet, the increased power of firearms and the proliferation of high-capacity magazines are worsening the severity of trauma. Practitioners are seeing a rise in complex ballistic injuries that require more time in the operating room and longer hospital stays, which is overwhelming the few facilities still standing.
